HDTV (High Definition Television) - Television that displays higher quality pictures than previous standard definition television. Can be delivered via flat screen LCD, flat screen Plasma, flat screen projection TV, or a wall projector.

Blu-ray DVD players, HD Tivo’s, and HD Digital Video Recorders (DVR) also offer High Definition signals for your HDTV.

HD (High Definition) Digital Television Signal – Your HDTV can get a High Definition Digital Television signal right out of the air you breathe. NO CABLE OR SATELLITE SERVICE IS NECESSARY! Yeah! That’s what I’m talkin’ about. If you don’t NEED to see Jon Stewart (Liebowitz), or Larry King, you can get a lot of free HD if you’re within 40 miles of a television station or two.

Of course, cable TV providers have many HD channels now, and so do satellite TV providers. But be prepared to pay at least $60 per month.

HDMI cable (High Definition Multimedia Interface) – This is the best quality video/sound cable that you can use for HDTV at this time (2009). Allows the display of the highest quality HD picture and digital sound.

Make sure you get an HDTV with at least 2 HDMI inputs, and 3 would be better, because you will want to be able to hook up your cable or satellite box, DVD or Blu-ray player, Playstation, or Xbox 360 and/or Home Theater system. For extra HDMI inputs you may have to spend an extra 50 or 100 bucks for an HDMI switcher, a device which can give you 4 more HDMI ports that can plug into a single HDMI TV input. Save time and money and make sure your HDTV has 3 or more inputs for HDMI.

Component Cables – If you can’t use HDMI, then these are the next best for displaying a high definition signal on your HDTV. These cables deliver separated color and sound signals through 5 different cables which are all bundled together. (Usually 5 hefty wires – green, blue, red, yellow, and white connectors)

Composite video/audio cables These are the crummiest way to get a signal from your DVD player, game system, or cable box to your television. They do not deliver high definition signals. These are fine if you live in Cuba, I guess. (Usually 3 thin wires – red, white, and yellow connectors)

DTV (Digital Television) – Television that is delivered to a TV by digital means (010101) rather than analog means. It is not necessarily High Definition, but can be either standard or high def. If you are getting a Digital converter box for your Standard Definition television, you are getting a device that enables you to not throw out your perfectly good TV. It converts the Digital television signals, which are the only kind flying through the air now (mostly) into a good, old fashioned analog signal that your “seasoned” TV likes.
